Mobilizing Action: Inspiring Greater Inclusion at Algonquin College
On Thursday July 17, 2025 more than 50 community members gathered on a hot summer evening to stand in solidarity and take action in support of the Academic Assistance for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (AAADD) program at Algonquin College. The group included current and former students, aspiring future students, families and community members who believe in inclusion.
Hosted by MPP Chandra Pasma, the event also saw a strong show of support from other local MPPs - Catherine McKenney, John Fraser, and Tyler Watt.
Key Highlights:
MPP Pasma shared that Algonquin College estimates an $80,000 annual shortfall between tuition and operating costs for the program.
It remains unclear whether the college would continue to offer AAADD even with the guarantee of additional funding. Unlike other colleges offering the CICE (Community Integration through Co-operative Education) program, Algonquin has not adopted that model either. The Board of Governors has not been consulted on the cancellation decision.
Students and alumni spoke passionately about the program’s life-changing role and how it has helped them mature, build friendships, and gain essential skills, while being part of the college community.
Parents described AAADD as a vital bridge program, offering foundational learning in English, math, computers, and life skills. They also noted its benefits to other departments through inclusive learning experiences.
Many questioned why the most vulnerable students should shoulder the burden of institutional financial pressures without meaningful alternatives.
Community members stressed that cancelling AAADD reflects a broader erosion of inclusive education in Ontario, from cuts in elementary and secondary special education to post-secondary programs.
The broader societal value of the program was highlighted. Supporting inclusion, independence, and pathways to volunteering and employment strengthens the entire community.
